    What Is a Sludge Blanket, and Why Does It Need Monitoring?

    A sludge blanket is the layer of settled solids that accumulates at the bottom of a clarifier, settling tank, or treatment lagoon. Operators track its depth because an unmonitored blanket that grows too thick can carry over into the effluent, raising total suspended solids (TSS) past the plant's discharge limits. Under Canada's Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations (SOR/2012-139), federally regulated wastewater systems must meet fixed TSS and carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand limits — sludge blanket control is one of the operational levers that keeps a plant inside those limits.

    How Does a Sludge Gun Detect the Sludge Interface?

    The Sludge Gun (Markland Specialty Engineering Model 10) works electronically instead of visually. A probe on the end of a marked cable is lowered into the tank; inside the probe, bursts of infrared light cross a gap to a photo transistor, and a solid-state circuit reads the difference in light transmission between clear liquid and sludge. A variable-pitch horn on the handle grows louder and changes tone as the probe passes from liquid, through the cloud layer above the sludge bed, into the sludge itself — so the operator locates the interface by ear, not by reading a dial.

    Yes, when the site follows standard fall-protection and, where applicable, confined-space procedures — sludge blanket readings themselves don't require entry, but they're taken from the edge of an open tank or catwalk, which carries its own fall and slip hazards. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) outlines the hazard-assessment steps that apply to work around open tanks and any adjacent confined spaces, including atmospheric testing before anyone enters an enclosed clarifier chamber or wet well for maintenance.
