A dry block heater holds tubes in a heated block instead of a water bath; close tube-to-block contact keeps the heat in. OHAUS units take 1, 2, 4 or 6 interchangeable modular blocks, chosen from over 40 block types and changed without tools. Digital models run from ambient +5 °C to 120 °C; analog models have a low range (ambient +5 to 100 °C) and a high range (75 to 150 °C). Uniformity within the block is ±0.1 °C at 37 °C, and heat-up takes 16 to 30 minutes depending on size. A digital 2-block model with a lid runs to 100 °C. All show their price and can be ordered online; the blocks are under Laboratory Accessories.
Digital models give better uniformity and stability for repeatable results and run from ambient +5 °C to 120 °C. Analog models are the economical choice, with a low range up to 100 °C and a high range from 75 to 150 °C.
Each block is drilled for one tube format (blocks have up to 96 wells, from 6.4 to 35 mm across), so count the formats you run at the same time. The units hold 1, 2, 4 or 6 blocks; heat-up time grows with size, from 16 minutes for 1 and 2 blocks to 23 for 4 and 30 for 6.
There is no water to fill, top up or keep clean, and the block holds each tube in close contact with the heat. A water bath still suits vessels that do not fit a block.
