A soil probe is the fastest way to pull a small, repeatable core by hand. Pick it by what the lab needs. Quick shallow slices: the open end soil probe, with a 15 in. slot cut to the end for easy emptying, or the step probe (33 or 40 in.), whose built-in step takes foot pressure. Intact cores: soil recovery probes with the Reach-&-Grab liner system and dual-purpose recovery probes with a 7 in. sample window, both 12 or 24 in. long with a 5/8 in. thread for a slide hammer. Heavy, repeated sampling: the 1 1/4 in. replaceable tip probe. Lawns: the turf probe takes a 5/8 x 7 in. plug. Bodies are nickel-plated chromoly, with stainless options on the recovery probes.
A probe is for shallow, quick, repeat sampling. A hand auger reaches deeper and handles harder ground, and a core sampler takes a longer, undisturbed core. Start with the lightest tool that reaches your depth in your soil, and move up only when it stops.
For volatiles, a liner-type recovery probe or a dual-purpose probe with a sample window, because US EPA Method 5035 calls for minimally disturbed, non-homogenized samples. For PFAS, the EPA guidance cited in our soil probe guide recommends stainless steel, HDPE, polypropylene or silicone. Confirm containers with your laboratory.
Use a recovery or dual-purpose probe: their 5/8 in. threaded top takes a slide hammer, which a plain hand probe does not. The step probe lets you add foot pressure in firmer ground.
