A soil core sampler drives a tube into the ground and brings back a relatively undisturbed core in a liner, ready for soil profiling or chemical analysis. ERE carries AMS core samplers: the Soil Core Sampler in alloy or stainless steel with 1.5" to 3" liners, the Split Soil Core Sampler that opens so you can inspect the core on site, the Signature Series sampler, and the Multi-Stage Soil Core Sampler for 2" cores to 48" deep. Mini soil core sampling kits add an auger and extensions to open the hole before coring. For VOCs, En Core®, Combo Core™ and EasyDraw samplers collect 5 to 25 g subsamples for EPA Method 5035.

Soil core sampler FAQ

Core sampler or auger?

An auger is fast for reaching depth and collecting bulk, disturbed soil. A core sampler keeps the soil's structure in a liner, which matters for VOC sampling, contaminant gradient studies and geotechnical work. Many crews use both: they auger to the target depth, then drive a core sampler, as the mini soil core sampling kits are designed to do. See our soil sampling equipment guide.

When should I use a split core sampler?

When you need to see the core right away. The AMS Split Soil Core Sampler opens so you can check moisture and consistency, or screen the soil with a PID or FID on the spot, and the sample stays in its liner. It comes in 1-3/8", 2" and 2-1/2" diameters and 6" or 12" lengths, with a liner and two end caps.

How do I sample soil for VOCs?

Volatile compounds escape quickly once soil is exposed, and EPA Method 5035 is the usual reference for collecting soil for VOC analysis. The En Core® sampler collects 5 g or 25 g, and its airtight cap turns it into its own sealed container; the Combo Core™ takes 5 g or 10 g from the same tool; and EasyDraw syringes with the PowerStop handle collect samples as the method describes.

What size core, and how deep?

AMS soil core samplers take 1.5" to 3" liners for sample lengths from 2" to 12". For deeper cores, the Multi-Stage Soil Core Sampler collects 2" cores to 48" with extra 12" sections, and the mini kits add a 3-1/4" auger and four 3 ft extensions so you can open the hole before coring.
