Cohesive powders flow poorly and do not run into a sampler on their own. These samplers have a slot or pocket with a scraper beside it: push the sampler in, rotate it through 360° so the scraper forces powder inside, then withdraw it. The stainless Powder Lance takes up to 190 ml along a 540 mm slot, horizontally through a sack or vertically in drums, kegs and super sacks. The Sample Lance comes with plain or heavy-duty handles, or none for light, fluffy powder. The Cohesive Slot Sampler takes a large core (110 to 300 ml), the Cohesive Pocket Sampler keeps the samples separate with a solid inner rod, and the Cohesive Sampler and U-D Cohesive Sampler sample one point. The single-use SteriWare Powder Lance comes sterile or not.
A thief or slot sampler for free-flowing product relies on powder running in when it opens, so a powder with poor flow can leave it short. The scraper on a cohesive sampler pushes product into the slot or pocket as you turn it. Heavy-duty handles give extra leverage to push the lance into hard, dense powder. Standard handles suit most other powders, and the lance can be supplied without handles when the powder is light and fluffy. It comes 600 or 1,000 mm long, in 316L stainless steel.
On the stainless Powder Lance, unscrew the tip and push the sample out with the ejection rod. On the Cohesive Sampler, close the chamber, withdraw the sampler and pull out the inner tube to discharge the sample. Spare tips, cleaning brushes and transport cases are sold separately.
The SteriWare Powder Lance is HDPE, used once and discarded, so there is no cleaning between batches; it comes sterile (SAL 10⁻⁶) or non-sterile, with a 300 or 500 mm blade. The stainless samplers are reusable and are cleaned between uses. More single-use samplers are in Powder Samplers.
