ERE carries disposable and reusable bailers for groundwater sampling, well purging and free-product checks in monitoring wells. Disposable models are used once, so there is nothing to decontaminate between wells: ESP Clear-View PVC bailers in seven sizes from 85 to 5,100 mL, BioBailers made with a biodegradable additive, polyethylene bailers, Hydro-Bailers for LNAPL and Voss Teflon® (PTFE) bailers for wells 2" and larger. Reusable models suit dedicated wells and repeat sampling: Monoflex PVC and stainless steel bailers, ERE's CarboBailer, and 316L stainless steel and polypropylene bailers for liquids and suspensions.

Tell us the well diameter, the depth and your analyte list, and we will recommend a bailer.

Bailer FAQ

Disposable or reusable bailers: which should I use?

Disposable bailers remove the risk of cross-contamination between wells and the time spent on decontamination and equipment blanks, which is why they are common in Phase II ESA sampling. Reusable stainless steel or PVC bailers make sense for a dedicated well sampled round after round, as long as they are fully decontaminated per your SOP. Our groundwater bailer guide covers both.

Which bailer material suits my analytes?

PVC and polyethylene suit most inorganics and general chemistry. For solvents and trace organics, use stainless steel or PTFE. For PFAS work, many protocols call for PTFE or FEP throughout the sampling train, so check your program's requirements before you order.

What size bailer fits my monitoring well?

Match the bailer's outside diameter to the inside diameter of the well casing, with room for smooth travel; for a 2" monitoring well, a 1.5" OD bailer is the usual choice. Monoflex stainless steel bailers range from 0.500" to 1.660" OD, ESP polyethylene bailers fit wells up to 2", and Voss Teflon® bailers are made for wells 2" and larger.

Can a bailer show free product (LNAPL) in a well?

Yes. A clear bailer lets you see the sample before you pour it off. ESP Clear-View Hydro-Bailers are designed for LNAPL sampling: a polyethylene ball valve lets water drain while the free product stays in the bailer, so you can check product thickness visually. To measure LNAPL or DNAPL thickness precisely, use an oil/water interface meter; see our interface meter guide.

Bailer or pump for low-flow sampling?

A bailer is simple and needs no power. Where your protocol calls for low-flow (minimal drawdown) sampling, use a peristaltic, bladder or submersible water sampling pump instead. For no-purge sampling, HydraSleeve samplers are another option.
