ERE supplies the pumps used to purge and sample groundwater monitoring wells, and the controllers that run them. Peristaltic pumps such as the Solinst Model 410, the Waterra Spectra Field-Pro and the PeriPump suit shallow wells and low-flow work. Bladder pumps, the Solinst Model 407 and Geotech portable and dedicated models, reach deeper and keep the drive gas away from the sample; they run on controllers such as the Solinst 464 and the Geotech geocontrol PRO. For purging and higher flows there are 12V submersibles from Proactive, Solinst and Whale, and ERE's BOSS-2 and BOSS-4 total fluids pumps for product recovery.
Tell us the well diameter, the depth to water and your analytes, and we will recommend a pump. We also service peristaltic and bladder pumps and their controllers.
Start with well depth and analytes. A peristaltic pump works by suction lift, so it is limited to roughly 8 to 10 m (26 to 33 ft) to water and is generally not recommended for VOCs. A bladder pump pushes the sample up with gas pressure that never touches the water, which suits VOCs and other sensitive analytes at depth. 12V submersible pumps deliver higher flows for purging. See our guides to low-flow peristaltic pumps and bladder pumps.
The Solinst Model 407 stainless steel bladder pump is rated to 150 m (500 ft), with flows from 100 mL/min or less up to 2 L/min. Geotech's 300 and 500 psi BP controllers drive bladder pumps to about 210 m (690 ft). For field crews, the Solinst 12V oil-less compressor and the geocontrol PRO, which has a built-in compressor, run bladder pumps from a vehicle battery.
The Solinst Model 408M Micro Double Valve Pump is only 3/8" (10 mm) in diameter. Proactive 12V pumps are 1.82" in diameter (1.44" for the Supernova 70) and fit wells from 1.5" ID up, Whale 12V purge pumps are made for 2" monitoring wells, and the Geotech bladder pumps are 1.66" OD.
Bladder pumps are the usual choice for VOC sampling, and the Solinst Model 407 is listed as meeting US EPA VOC standards. For PFAS, Proactive's 12V Stainless Steel XL is built from 100% virgin stainless steel for high-turbidity PFOA, PFOS and PFAS sampling. Check the wetted materials against your program's requirements before you order.
Low-flow sampling needs a steady, adjustable flow, typically 100 to 500 mL/min. Bladder pumps use timed controllers such as the Solinst 464, which stores 99 user flow rates. Proactive's Low Flow Sampling Controller and Power Booster controllers regulate its 12V pumps down to about 40 mL/min.
