ERE carries personal, area and bioaerosol sampling pumps, sorted here by flow. Low-flow pumps for sorbent tubes include the Gilian LFS-113 (1 to 350 cc/min) and 800i (200 to 800 cc/min, built for back pressure on VOC methods). General personal pumps include the GilAir-3 and GilAir-5, the GilAir Plus, the Gilian 5000, the Buck Elite and Libra Plus and the Zefon Escort ELF; the Buck Allin is intrinsically safe. Higher flows come from the Gilian 10i and Gilian 12 (to 12 L/min), the AirCon-2 area sampler (2 to 30 L/min) and Zefon high-volume pumps, and the Buck Bio-Culture runs 30 to 120 L/min for bioaerosols.

Which flow range do I need?

The method sets it. Sorbent tubes for VOCs and gases run at low flows, from a few cc/min to about 1 L/min; filter cassettes for dust, metals and asbestos run at 1 to 5 L/min; spore traps run at 5 to 15 L/min; and area or clearance sampling uses high-volume pumps up to 30 L/min. Pick a pump whose range covers your method's flow with margin. See our air sampling pump guide.

Do I need an intrinsically safe pump?

Yes, where flammable gases or vapours may be present. The Buck Allin and Allin Plus are personal samplers certified for those locations; the Gilian BDX-II, for example, is not intrinsically safe and is built for asbestos and lead abatement work.

How accurate must the flow be?

NIOSH methods call for flow within ±5% before and after each sample. Constant-flow pumps such as the Gilian 5000, 10i and 800i hold ±5%, and the Zefon Escort ELF adds an internal flow sensor. Check the flow with a calibrator before and after every sample, with the full sampling train in line.
