A spill kit keeps the absorbents and protective gear for a first response in one place, next to the hazard. ERE carries two SpilKleen kits, each in oil-only, universal and HazMat versions. The 45 gallon spill kit is packed in a drum with 50 sorbent pads, 3 booms, 5 socks, a bag of granular absorbent, a neoprene drain cover, disposal bags, a retractable shovel, goggles, nitrile gloves and Tyvek suits. The 250 L mobile spill kit is a wheeled cart with 100 pads, 4 socks, 4 pillows, a bag of SpeediKleen, a drain cover, disposal bags, goggles and gloves.

For refills and loose absorbents, see industrial absorbents.

Spill kit FAQ

Oil-only, universal or HazMat kit?

Pick the type before the size. Oil-only kits absorb petroleum products and repel water, so they work on wet ground and on water. Universal kits take oil, coolants and water-based fluids for mixed shop spills. HazMat kits are for aggressive chemicals such as acids and caustics. The wrong type is a full kit that cannot do the job; see our spill kit guide.

What is the difference between the 45 gallon and the 250 L kit?

The numbers mean different things: "45 gallon" is the drum the kit is packed in, while 250 L is the stated sorbent capacity of the cart kit. The drum kit adds booms, a shovel and Tyvek suits; the cart kit carries more pads plus pillows and rolls to the spill on wheels.

Is a spill kit enough on its own?

Check the contents against your procedure: neither kit's record lists a neutralizing material, waste labels, caution tape or first aid supplies. A kit contains a spill; it does not report it, and a spill that reaches a drain or the environment may have to be reported to the province. Keep the kit near the hazard, show every worker where it is, and replace what is used the same day.
