A moisture analyzer weighs a sample, heats it and reports the weight it loses as moisture content (loss on drying). OHAUS offers five models. The MB23 (110 g, 0.1% readability, infrared, up to 160 °C) covers routine checks. The MB32, MB62 and MB92 (90 g, 0.01%, carbon-fibre infrared heating, up to 180 or 200 °C) differ in their method library, result memory and user access control. The MB120 (120 g, 0.01%) uses a halogen lamp and heats to 230 °C. All show their price and can be ordered online; pans and accessories are under Laboratory Accessories.
Loss on drying: the weight a sample loses when heated, as a percentage of its starting weight. Every volatile counts, not only water, so a solvent in the sample reads as moisture. For soils, ASTM D2216 reports water content on the dry mass, which the analyzer shows as %RG rather than %MC.
Enough to make one balance count small: on a 1 mg analyzer, one count is 0.2% of a 0.5 g sample but 0.01% of a 10 g sample. A small sample cannot give a result finer than that, whatever the display shows.
Not automatically. Correlate each new sample type against your oven method, adjusting the temperature and the shut-off, before you rely on the analyzer. Our moisture analyzer guide covers the correlation and the model choice.
Review the hazard first: ASTM D2216 and D4959 caution against heating contaminated or flammable-organic soils, and OHAUS warns of fire or explosion risk with solvents.
