The parts around an AMS soil sampler. Soil core liners in butyrate plastic, 3/4 to 3 in. across and 1 to 36 in. long, also made in stainless steel, aluminum and brass, hold the core for the lab, and blue polyethylene end caps seal them. For hard ground: Echo gas drill accessories, including 5/8 in. thread adapters for 1/2 in. gas, SDS-Max, SDS-Plus and splined drills; concrete coring bits from 1.5 to 3 in. that drill 16 to 18 in. deep; and the Rock Breaker, an alloy steel chisel used with the slide hammer to split stones in an augered hole. For logging: the Munsell Soil Color Chart, developed with the US Soil Conservation Service and the industry standard for classifying soil colour.
Butyrate plastic is the standard liner; stainless steel, aluminum and brass versions are also listed. Cap both ends with the polyethylene end caps, which fit plastic, stainless, brass and aluminum liners from 3/4 to 3 in.
Use the Rock Breaker with a slide hammer to split stones and break through hard pan in an augered hole, or a concrete coring bit on an SDS-Max or splined drill to core through a slab first.
