Laboratory balance FAQ
Analytical, semi-micro or precision balance?
Readability sets the smallest sample you can weigh reliably. Under the USP <41> repeatability rule, a balance's best-case minimum weight is 820 times its readability: about 82 mg on a 0.1 mg analytical balance and 8.2 mg on a 0.01 mg semi-micro. Precision balances (1 mg to 1 g) suit larger samples and higher capacities. Our laboratory balance guide explains the choice.
Where should a balance be installed?
On a stable bench away from vents, vibration, heat sources, doors and hallways: a balance reaches its specification only in the right room, and it should be checked on a schedule you set. Many Explorer and Adventurer models have AutoCal internal calibration.
Do I need a legal-for-trade balance?
Only if you buy or sell by weight: under Measurement Canada rules, that is trade and needs an approved, inspected device unless it is exempt. The Scout SJX jewelry scales are certified for Class II and Class III legal-for-trade use, and several precision models list a certified readability.
