A silt bag, also called a dewatering bag, filters water pumped out of an excavation, trench or sump: the pump discharges into the bag, which holds back silt and sediment while the water passes through the fabric. The Sampson Construction Silt Bag is 3 x 4 ft, made of black nonwoven polypropylene heat-treated on one side, and rated 50 micron. It is an economical way to keep sediment out of storm drains and watercourses during construction dewatering. For contaminated site water, which needs treatment rather than filtration, see Remediation — Water Treatment; for sludge at a treatment plant, see Sludge Dewatering.

Silt bag FAQ

What size and rating is the bag?

3 x 4 ft, nonwoven polypropylene rated 50 micron. Tell us the pump flow and how much sediment you expect if you need more than one bag on a job.

Where can the filtered water go?

That is set by your municipality and province, and by the site's permit. A silt bag removes sediment; it does not treat dissolved contaminants.

Silt bag or filter bag?

A silt bag takes sediment-laden pump discharge on the ground. A filter bag sits in a housing on a pressurized line and filters process water to a set micron rating.
