Bottles for field samples and the lab bench. Sampling Systems Wide Mouth Transparent Bottles (30 to 2,000 ml) and Wide Mouth Amber Bottles (30 to 1,000 ml) are HDPE with a PP lid, in the same sizes; the wide neck takes a scoop or funnel. The Sterile Liquid and Powder Bottle is gamma irradiated and individually bagged. PTFE bottles (1 to 2,000 ml, virgin PTFE, to 280 °C) are for aggressive or trace-sensitive samples, and the 316L Stainless Screw Top Bottle holds 500 or 1,000 ml. Also: powder bottles, a 4 L square bottle with a handle and 4 to 15 ml narrow-mouth PP bottles. For the bench: Bel-Art safety-labeled and volume-labeled wash bottles, Write-On bottles and a wash bottle carrier.
Any analysis that needs a preservative added in the bottle: metals, mercury, nutrients, cyanide, sulphide and volatile organics. The lab supplies those bottles already dosed. A clean HDPE bottle generally suits unpreserved general chemistry, sediment and sludge, product samples and retains, if the lab accepts it.
Not for semi-volatile organics: US EPA SW-846 specifies glass with PTFE-lined caps. Amber HDPE cuts light but is still plastic, so it is no substitute where a method calls for amber glass.
No. Use it as supplied, keep it in its bag until you fill it, and do not touch the inside of the bottle or cap, as US EPA drinking water guidance says.
A Safety-Vented wash bottle: its two-piece valve vents solvent vapour so the bottle does not build pressure and drip, and it is labeled for a common solvent such as acetone or isopropanol. Use it only with solvents compatible with LDPE. For more on sample bottles, see our sample bottles guide.
