The stainless spatulas are 304 stainless steel, crevice free and polished, so they clean easily: the Chattaway (9 to 10 mm blade, 100 to 303 mm long), Nuffield, Trulla, flat, double-ended flat, curved and narrow spoon spatulas, plus micro-spatulas for surface sampling from drums, kegs and sacks. Single-use SteriWare spatulas are moulded and packed in a cleanroom, individually bagged and batch traceable: V-spatulas with open or closed tips, U-blade powder spatulas, micro-spatulas of 0.3 to 2 ml for vials and narrow necks, a flat spatula and the PowderSafe, with a cover that comes off at the lab. Blue metal-detectable versions can be found by a metal detector.
Stainless spatulas are reusable and are cleaned between samples. Single-use SteriWare spatulas come straight from the bag and are thrown away after use, so there is no cleaning, no cleaning validation and no carry-over; many are offered sterile (SAL 10⁻⁶), and the V and powder spatulas have a 5-year shelf life.
A closed tip is made for sampling a fixed volume; an open tip is for general sampling and dispensing. Both suit free-flowing and cohesive powders and stand up on their own. The standard 20 mm blade takes more of a cross-sectional sample; the narrow 10 mm blade puts a small sample into a test tube.
A micro-spatula. SteriWare micro-spatulas have 4 to 13 mm blades holding 0.3 to 2 ml, made for small vials and narrow-necked sample containers, in PP, PS or HDPE; stainless micro-spatulas have blades from 2.5 to 12 mm wide. The Narrow Spoon Spatula holds 2 ml at the end of a 235 mm stainless spatula.
