A UV system disinfects water by passing it under ultraviolet light, which stops bacteria, viruses and protozoa from reproducing; it adds no chemicals and does not change the taste. Luminor's Blackcomb line uses 304 stainless, single-end reactors made to ASME pressure vessel standards, so the lamp changes without draining the chamber. The Blackcomb 4.1 is the basic model; the 5.1 adds a colour controller showing lamp life and faults; the 6.1 adds a 254 nm UV sensor, a 4–20 mA output and a solenoid shut-off option. NSF 55 Class A systems are validated for primary disinfection and Class B for supplemental disinfection of potable water. Glacier UV LED units run on 12 V with no lamp to change, and the Glacier water bottle disinfects 600 mL in a 90-second cycle.

Residential UV FAQ

NSF 55 Class A or Class B?

Class A systems are validated for primary disinfection of a water source and include a UV sensor that monitors intensity continuously. Class B systems are validated for supplemental disinfection of water that is already potable. Your water test and local rules decide which you need.

What does UV not remove?

UV inactivates microorganisms only. It does not remove chlorine, dissolved metals, hardness or particles, and cloudy or iron-bearing water needs pre-filtration so the light reaches the water. See our UV disinfection guide and filter cartridges.

Lamp or LED?

The Blackcomb systems use UV lamps that change with a bayonet connector and no tools. Glacier units use UVC LEDs that turn on only when water flows, through an integral flow switch, and last 5,000 hours of on-time, with no lamp change.
