Earplugs and earmuffs are rated by NRR, the noise reduction measured in the lab. RONCO Hush foam earplugs are single-use polyurethane: the uncorded Hush 14 (NRR 33) and Hush 13, and the corded, bell-shaped 50-33C (NRR 32). Reusable thermoplastic rubber plugs, the 50-23 and 50-25 (NRR 25), are corded and can be washed between uses. For food plants, the 50-15 foam plug (NRR 32, 3 mm ball bearing) and the 50-25 are metal-detectable. Earmuffs: the hi-vis 50-436 (NRR 23, multi-position) and the dielectric 50-443 (NRR 28). The Hush dispenser holds 500-pair refills and the Howard Leight Leight Source 400 400 pairs, wall or table mounted.
Do not subtract it from the noise level as printed. CSA Z94.2 derates earplugs to 50% of the NRR (minus 3 dB on a dBA reading), because lab fits beat shop-floor fits. See our earplug guide.
Most Canadian jurisdictions set the exposure limit at 85 dBA, and CCOHS lists 105 dBA as the limit for earplugs: above it, use earmuffs or plugs and muffs together.
Foam is the economical default and seals well when rolled and inserted properly. Reusable TPR plugs suit workers who put plugs in and out all day; metal-detectable plugs suit food plants, where a lost plug must be found.
