Before you recover free product, you sample and screen it. The ESP Clear-View Hydro-Bailers are single-use, clear rigid PVC bailers for LNAPL: a polyethylene ball valve lets water drain while the free product stays in the bailer, where it can be seen (200 mL, 24 per case). ERE's reusable CarboBailer comes individually wrapped with a bottom-emptying device. For a quick screen, New Pig oil detection test paper changes colour on contact with gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, lubricating oils and mineral oils: dip a strip in water or press it to soil (100 strips, used at 15 to 27 °C). Where product has to come out continuously, the Geotech PRC passive skimmer recovers LNAPL down to a sheen.

Hydrocarbon sampling FAQ

Why a clear bailer for LNAPL?

Its ball valve lets water drain while free product stays inside, and the clear PVC wall shows the product in the bailer at a glance. The Clear-View is single-use, so there is nothing to decontaminate between wells.

How sensitive is the oil test paper?

It is a screen, not a measurement: the record says sensitivity depends largely on the solubility of the hydrocarbon. Use it to decide where to sample, and confirm with a lab analysis.

Bailer or interface meter?

An interface meter measures the depth and thickness of product layers in the well without taking a sample; a bailer brings a sample to the surface. Many programs use both. See our interface meter guide.
