Bacteria break down petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater; what usually limits them is oxygen, then nutrients or the size of the population. ERE's bioremediation products supply each. Oxygen: OxyClean Advanced 14FR (sodium percarbonate, 13% available oxygen) for a fast pulse, OxyClean Advanced 18SR (calcium peroxide, about 17.3% active oxygen) released over months, and OxyDfuse cells, calcium peroxide in a porous tube that sits in a 2 or 4 in. well with no pump. Bacteria: BIIO, a concentrated hydrocarbon-digesting culture (BioSafety Level 1) for soil and water. Nutrients: NutriBIIO-S, a polymer-coated 18-6-12 released over 4 to 16 months, and a water-soluble 35-5-10 for 4 to 8 weeks.

A site assessment of dissolved oxygen, nutrients and bacterial counts shows the limiting factor. Oxygen is the most common; nutrients run short in sandy or leached soils; bacteria are added when the native population is too small or too slow, as in cold or heavily impacted soil. Products can be combined: an oxygen-release compound with NutriBIIO-S, plus BIIO if needed. See our bioremediation guide.
Both release oxygen; the difference is speed. 14FR (50 lb) gives a quick pulse, suited to a recent release with a defined source; 18SR (110 lb) releases over many months, for an established, dispersed plume that needs sustained oxygen.
Each cell is calcium peroxide in a porous tube placed in a monitoring or injection well: the OXY-D-FUSE-2 (1.6 x 17.5 in.) for 2 in. wells and the OXY-D-FUSE-4 (3.5 x 20 in.) for 4 in. wells and larger. Oxygen diffuses into the groundwater with no pump; field studies cited in the product record found release for up to a year. A row of cells across a plume can act as a barrier to its migration.
Excavation removes contamination in days; in-situ bioremediation typically runs from several months to a few years, depending on the plume, the contaminant and the release rate of the amendment. Closure is measured against CCME and provincial soil and groundwater criteria, not against the product applied.
