ERE carries benchtop centrifuges for environmental, clinical and research labs. The OHAUS Frontier 5000 series covers four classes: the Mini (6,000 rpm, 2,000 x g) for quick spins, the Micro (up to 15,200 rpm) for microtubes and DNA/RNA work, the Multi low-speed general-purpose centrifuge and the Multi Pro high-speed universal model (up to 30,000 rpm), with interchangeable rotors. Labnet offers the Spectrafuge 24D microcentrifuge (16,300 x g) and the Spectrafuge 6C for 15 mL tubes. Globe Scientific supplies 50 mL and 15 mL centrifuge tubes and microcentrifuge tubes.

Which centrifuge do I need?

Start from the tube. Microtubes and PCR strips suit a mini or micro centrifuge; 15 and 50 mL conical tubes need a multi or a clinical centrifuge such as the Spectrafuge 6C; larger volumes and high speeds call for the Frontier Multi Pro. Our centrifuge guide compares the classes.

Why compare centrifuges in x g instead of rpm?

Because force depends on the rotor radius as well as the speed: the same 6,000 rpm gives 2,000 x g in the Frontier 5306 mini, 2,560 x g in a small angle rotor and 4,427 x g in a 15 mL rotor. Protocols give a force in x g, so use the rotor's figure.

Will my tubes survive the speed?

Check the tube rating before you spin. Globe Scientific's 15 mL acrylic tube is rated to 5,000 rpm (6,160 x g), its 50 mL polypropylene tube to 12,320 x g and its 1.5 mL microtubes to 25,000 x g or more. A fast rotor with the wrong tube is a hazard, not a time saver.
