ERE carries the samplers used to take representative liquid samples from drums, totes, tanks and open water. Glass, PTFE and polyethylene coliwasas trap a full top-to-bottom column, which is what layered or unknown waste needs. Glass and HDPE drum thieves, 42" long, are faster for clean single-phase liquids. For tanks, vats, ponds and lagoons, long-handled dippers come with 3, 6 or 12 ft handles, and Conbar telescopic and stainless steel sub-surface samplers hold a 1,000 mL jar at depth.

Tell us the liquid, the container and whether the sampler must be disposable, and we will recommend one. For sterile single-use samplers, see liquid sampling devices.

Drum and tank sampler FAQ

Coliwasa or drum thief?

Use a coliwasa for layered, viscous or unknown waste: lowered open, it fills to the surrounding level, and closing its bottom valve traps a full vertical column, which is what a composite waste sample needs. For clean single-phase liquids, a drum thief is faster and cheaper. Our coliwasa guide explains the method.

Glass, PTFE or polyethylene?

Choose by chemistry. Glass resists a broad range of chemicals and lets you see the sample; PTFE handles the most aggressive solvents and acids; polyethylene is the economical disposable choice for aqueous samples. The wrong material can fail mid-sample, so check compatibility first; see our drum and tank sampling guide.

How do I sample a tank, lagoon or manhole?

Use a sampler on a handle. SP Bel-Art long-handled HDPE dippers take 500 or 1,000 mL on handles of 3, 6 or 12 ft, with an angled bowl for overhead sampling, and Conbar sub-surface samplers hold a 1,000 mL wide-mouth jar: the telescopic 7000 Series reaches up to 24 ft, and the 6000 Series is stainless steel.

Disposable or reusable?

Disposable samplers remove cross-contamination between drums and the cost and risk of decontamination, which is usually the right call for hazardous or unknown waste. Glass coliwasas are sold 12 to a case, and HDPE drum thieves come standard, pre-cleaned, sterilized or anti-static.
