Augers

ERE Inc. stocks hand-operated soil augers for environmental site assessments, geotechnical investigations, and routine soil sampling. Every soil sampling auger we carry is built by AMS, and the line covers each common boring condition — so you can match the auger head to the soil instead of forcing one tool through everything.

Soil auger types — pick by soil condition

Auger performance is governed by soil type. The wrong head clogs, refuses, or loses the sample; the right one cuts clean and brings material up intact. Use this to choose:

• Regular augers — the general-purpose head for loamy, medium-cohesive soils. See the AMS Regular Soil Auger, the default head for the bulk of most soil profiles.
• Sand augers — closed-tip design that retains dry, loose, granular material. See AMS Sand Augers.
• Mud augers — open, self-cleaning body for wet, sticky, clay-heavy ground that fouls a regular head. See AMS Mud Augers.
• Dutch augers — pointed, narrow-blade head for fibrous, rooty, or marshy soils and peat. See AMS Dutch Augers.
• Planer augers — used to clean and flatten the bottom of a borehole between sampling intervals. See AMS Planer Augers.
• Gouge augers — half-cylinder blade that takes a continuous, relatively undisturbed profile in soft soils. See AMS Gouge Augers.

AMS Signature Series augers

For crews running augers daily, the AMS Signature Series upgrades the same head profiles with a more durable, ergonomic build. Available in the core configurations: Regular, Sand, Mud, and Dutch.

Specialty and accessory augers

• One-Piece Augers — fixed head-and-shaft units for quick, shallow borings.
• Flighted Screw Augers — continuous flighting to advance and clear a hole.
• AMS Soil Recovery Augers — dual-purpose head that bores and recovers a sample in one pass.
• Rock Breaker — breaks through cobble and obstructions that stop a screw auger.

Choosing the right soil auger

Most field programs carry two or three heads — a regular auger for the bulk of the profile, plus a sand or mud auger for the layers that misbehave.
