A magnetic stirrer spins a PTFE-coated bar in the vessel with a magnet under the plate, so nothing but the bar touches the sample; a hotplate stirrer heats while it stirs. OHAUS covers the range: the Guardian 2000 (analog) and Guardian 3000 (digital) for 15 L, the Guardian 5000 (50 to 1,800 rpm, 20 to 22 L) and Guardian 7000 (60 to 1,600 rpm), multi-position stirrers for several samples, large-volume stirrers for carboys, and the Achiever 5000 overhead stirrer (up to 200 Ncm, 100 L). OHAUS models show their price and can be ordered online. Hanna mini-stirrers (1 L) and the auto-reverse stirrer (2.5 L), Bel-Art Spinbar stir bars and stirring paddles are quoted.
Hotplate and stirrer FAQ
Magnetic stirrer or hotplate stirrer?
A hotplate stirrer when the sample must be heated while it is stirred: digestions, dissolving salts, concentrating. For room-temperature work such as titrations and pH or conductivity measurements, a compact magnetic stirrer is enough. See our magnetic stirrer guide.
Which size do I need?
Pick a rated capacity well above your largest batch, and remember that ratings are for water: thick samples need more drive. The Hanna mini-stirrers take 1 L, the Guardian hotplates 15 to 22 L, and the OHAUS large-volume stirrers go to 200 L. If the bar decouples and jumps in a viscous sample, move to the Achiever 5000 overhead stirrer.
Which stir bar should I use?
A PTFE-coated bar long enough to span most of the vessel base but short enough to spin freely. Bel-Art Spinbar bars come as octagons with a pivot ring, as polygons, and colour-coded for keeping reagents apart; all are autoclavable.
Can I stir flammable solvents on a hotplate?
Treat it as a hazard: CCOHS notes that stirring flammable liquids can build static, and that they should be kept from hot surfaces. Use a non-heating stirrer, or a probe-controlled model with a maximum temperature set below the flash point, such as a Guardian with SmartHeat.
