A soil sampling kit puts the augers, extensions, handle and core sampler for one job in one case. AMS kits come in three groups. Hand auger kits: the Basic and Signature Series Basic kits carry regular, sand and mud augers, three 4 ft extensions, a soil core sampler with liner and a slide hammer to reach about 12 ft, while the mini auger kits pack a regular and a mud auger with 3 or 4 ft extensions in a soft case. Core kits: the Mini Soil Core Sampling Kit augers to depth, then takes a virtually undisturbed core in a liner. Powered kits: the Flighted Auger Kit drills 2 in. holes to 9 ft and the Hollowstem Auger Kit 3 in. cased holes to 6 ft.
A sand auger holds loose, granular soil such as sand and gravel; a mud auger holds wet, cohesive clay and silt that would fall out of an open barrel; the regular auger covers most other ground. The Basic kits carry all three, so the crew can switch heads on the same extensions. See our soil sampling equipment guide.
The Basic kits add the soil core sampler, liner, end caps and slide hammer in a wheeled hard case, and weigh 56 to 60 lb. The mini auger kits carry only a regular and a mud auger with extensions in a soft case, at 11 to 17 lb, for quick shallow holes.
AMS recommends its stainless steel environmental kit for soils with low levels of contaminants or where equipment is cleaned in an acid bath. For PFAS work, the US EPA guidance cited in our soil probe guide recommends stainless steel, HDPE, polypropylene or silicone.
When hand augering stops, or when you need a cased hole. The Flighted Auger Kit reaches 9 ft and takes cores in liners; the Hollowstem kit cuts a 3 in. hole with a 1 1/8 in. bore, so soil, soil gas and groundwater (with bailers up to 1 in.) can be sampled through the augers.
