A staff gauge is the simplest water level instrument: a graduated plate mounted in the water and read by eye. ERE's porcelain enamel staff gauges come in five styles. Style A sections are 4 in. wide and 3.33 ft tall, graduated every foot, tenth and 0.02 ft, and stack to 13.33 ft. Style C sections are 2.5 in. wide and 3.33 ft tall, graduated every 0.01 ft and numbered every foot and tenth, and stack to 20 ft. Style I is 2.5 in. wide, graduated every 0.25 in. and numbered every inch. Style E is 3.5 in. wide and graduated in tenths of a foot without numbers, with figure plates where numbers are needed. Style M is metric: 65 mm wide by 1 m tall.
Staff gauge FAQ
Which style do I need?
Match the units of your record: feet and tenths (Style A or C), inches (Style I) or metres (Style M). Style C gives the finest foot graduation, 0.01 ft, and the tallest stack, 20 ft.
Staff gauge or water level logger?
A staff gauge gives a reading each time someone looks at it. For a continuous record, add a logger such as the Solinst Levelogger, and use the staff gauge as the visual reference for its readings.
Can I read a staff gauge in metric units?
Yes: Style M is metric, 65 mm wide by 1 m tall; the other styles read in feet or inches. Send the style, the number of sections and the range to cover with a quote request.
