Calibration gas is the certified reference your gas detector is checked and adjusted against, so it has to match the detector's sensors and setpoints. ERE supplies Norlab calibration gases in non-refillable steel cylinders from 17 to 550 L and in 58 L aluminum cylinders for reactive components such as H2S, CO and combustibles. Mixtures are NIST traceable and can be blended to your specification, from single gases to 4-gas confined-space mixes. To automate the routine, the Dräger Bump Test Station needs no power and fits X-am 1700 to 5600 monitors, and the RKI SDM-03 docking station tests and calibrates RKI 03 Series monitors.
Match the gas to your detector, not the other way around: the target gases and concentrations are set by the instrument manufacturer and your alarm setpoints. A standard 4-gas confined-space monitor is usually calibrated from one cylinder holding a combustible gas (methane or pentane), oxygen, CO and H2S. Reactive gases such as H2S lose stability in steel, so mixtures that contain them come in treated aluminum cylinders such as Norlab's 58 L Portagreen. Inert and non-reactive gases can use steel cylinders. Size the cylinder to your usage, so the gas is used before its expiry date.
The regulator has to match the cylinder outlet and the flow your detector needs. Norlab steel cylinders come with CGA 600, C-10 or CGA 165 outlets, and the 58 L aluminum cylinder has a C-10 outlet. ERE carries regulators for 17 and 34 L steel cylinders and for 29, 34 and 58 L aluminum and 103 L steel cylinders.
A bump test briefly exposes the detector to gas to confirm that the sensors and alarms respond; a calibration adjusts the readings to a known concentration. Both use calibration gas, at the intervals set by the manufacturer and your site procedure. Our bump test vs calibration guide explains both.
