For reliable operation the dissolved oxygen content must be at least 15% of the iron (or iron+manganese) content, alkalinity greater than twice the combined sulfate and chloride concentration, free chlorine below 0.5 ppm, and hydrogen sulfide, oil and polyphosphates removed upstream. Low-D.O. water can be pre-aerated; low-pH water can be raised with Corosex, calcite or soda ash ahead of the Birm filter.
